Social protection: expected changes to Christmas 2021 payment dates as a festive bonus due within days

Christmas Day is just over four weeks away, which means preparations are underway for the holiday season.

The holiday season sees millions of people on a break from work, including bank and post office workers.

This means that welfare recipients should have their usual payment dates affected by these closures.

Post offices and banks open for half a day on December 24 and will not reopen until December 30. They will also be closed on Monday January 3.

As a result, social benefits will be paid a few days earlier than usual.

Although the Social Protection Ministry has not confirmed the exact new payment dates, based on last year’s adjustments, the new deadlines can be predicted.

Christmas will disrupt the dates of payment of social benefits.

According to Money Guide Ireland, here are the expected changes to weekly payments to bank accounts this Christmas:

  • Due date: Friday December 24 – Paid: Friday December 24
  • Due date: Monday December 27 – Paid: Friday December 24
  • Due date: Tuesday December 28 – Paid: Friday December 24
  • Due date: Wednesday December 29 – Payment: Friday December 24
  • Due date: Thursday, December 30 – Paid: Thursday, December 30
  • Due: Friday December 31 – Payment: Friday December 31
  • Due date: Monday January 3 – Paid: Thursday December 30

As for the expected changes in weekly payments to post offices, the same site provides:

  • Due date: Monday December 27 – Paid: Tuesday December 21
  • Due date: Tuesday December 28 – Paid: Wednesday December 22
  • Due date: Wednesday December 29 – Payment: Thursday December 23
  • Due date: Thursday, December 30 – Paid: Thursday, December 30
  • Due: Friday December 31 – Payment: Friday December 31
  • Due date: Monday January 3 – Paid: Friday December 31

It comes as the Christmas bonus has to be paid out to thousands of applicants within days.

The annual cash allowance is paid to people who apply for a long-term social security allowance.

The bonus is 100% of the normal weekly long-term social protection allowance that applicants receive, the minimum amount being € 20.

Beneficiaries eligible for payment will receive the bonus between December 6 and December 10, meaning there are less than two weeks until the additional funds are distributed.
